In 1960, he was involved in an accident that nearly amputated his arm. Instead of having it amputated, he went to a revival in the neighbourhood, where it is said that an evangelist healed it by the power of faith. It was discovered that his “wonder water” had bacteria that might be hazardous to humans, and as he did not have a licence to sell it, this created problems for his evangelism. Greenwood, South Carolina was the place where he was born. His mother, W. M. Jenkins, was also a well-known preacher in and around Florida in the 1960s. He married Linda Harkins.
