About

Catherine Laboure was born on May 2, 1806 in France. She died on Dec 31, 1876 (age 70). A member of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, she was the recipient of a vision from the Blessed Virgin Mary that led to the creation of the Miraculous Medal, which is worn by Christians all over the world.

She awoke in the middle of the night in July 1830 to the sound of a voice calling her to the adjacent chapel. Once there, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her in a vision and showed her the medal Laboure that she was destined to design. She claims that during the vision she was instructed that those who wore the medal would “get enormous graces” as a result of their participation. At the funeral for her mother, it is stated that she picked up a statue of the Virgin Mary and said to it, “Now you will be my mother.”
