Abune Paulos was born on November 3, 1935 in Ethiopia. He died on Aug 16, 2012 (age 76). From 1992 until 2012, he served as the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
After completing his studies at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in the United States, he continued his education by enrolling in the PhD programme at Princeton Theological Seminary. In recognition of his contributions to the cause of world peace and humanitarianism, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees awarded him the Nansen Medal. His family has a long history of involvement with the Abba Garima Monastery, which is located in the Tigray Province not far from the town of Adwa.
